Words

The Livonian words in the database are shown in bold, in the Livonian script, arranged according to the Livonian alphabet. In the case of several homonyms (words with the same spelling), this is indicated by the number indexed after the word.

A green dot in front of a word indicates that the word complies with the standard of the Livonian language, a yellow one – that another word should be used instead.

The Livonian alphabet has the following letters:

In the teaching texts and examples within this database, additional signs are used to help users hear a clearer pronunciation of the words. These signs appear in parentheses under each word. The apostrophe (‘) indicates a broken tone or intonation, while a vertical line (|) marks the boundary between parts of a compound word. Additionally, the letter ǭ is used to signify a different pronunciation in the first syllables of a word (closer to the sound a).

If a word (or example) has a recorded pronunciation, it is indicated by a blue icon following the word. You can hear the pronunciation by clicking on the icon.

For each word, its word class is indicated. If the word has different forms of inflections or conjugations, you can view them by pressing the blue button with the corresponding declension or conjugation number (type number). Pressing the button will open a table, which is currently still in the process of editing. If the forms of the given word have not yet been standardized, pressing the button will not open the table. However, you can predict the forms from another sample word of the same type.

The meaning of the word may be followed by additional information, such as the specific field in which the word is used or other explanations in parentheses, like the Latin name of a plant.

If a word has multiple meanings, each meaning will be listed in sequence (a, b, c). To illustrate the meaning and usage of the word, examples of phrases (preceded by a diamond ♦) or sentences (preceded by a black dot ●) with translations are provided.

If the word is related to another word, links are displayed at the end of the word card.

Place names

Geospatial information is available for place names in the database, showing the location marked by the place name on a map. This can be viewed by pressing the map icon. The place names section (Places) also includes additional information, such as descriptions of place names in Livonian and their translations, as well as comments related to the places designated by these names.
